May Day Celebration & Flower Walk<
Celebrated for thousands of years throughout diverse cultures, Mayday could be the most ancient religious festival in the Northern Hemisphere. Traditionally people "went a Maying" by going into the woods and bringing back leaves, boughs and blossoms to decorate themselves and their homes. Trees were planted, Maypoles were erected, music was played, dances were danced, drinks were drunk and love was made. Winter was over and spring had sprung. Come join the merry makers and help wrap the ribbons around the Maypole! Followed by a spring flower identification walk.
Sanctuary Medicinal Plant and Wildflower Walk will be led by Mona Rynearson. Mona has a special interest in native species and knows only too well the inroads exotics have made taking over much of the habitat native plant species depend on including many medicinal/edible species. She will guide participants in the identification of plant species found along the walking trails in the woods and wetlands at Sanctuary. She asks that people bring a guide to wild plants of the northeast (i.e., Petersons) to assist in keying out specific characteristics of a species. Ms. Rynearson is chair of the Zurich Bog Management Committee and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society and the New York State DEC Region 8 Open Space Advisory Committee.
